Despite being a leader in healthcare compliance and cybersecurity, Clearwater faced growing competition from companies with flashier, more user-friendly interfaces. While their tools and managed services are industry-leading, the product suite appeared fragmented and dated, underselling the innovation and value behind their offerings.

Clearwater partnered with UEGroup to shift that perception. In a focused, month-long engagement, we delivered a conceptual redesign of key product screens that showed how Clearwater could unify its interface, create an intuitive experience for both experts and non-experts, and better showcase the power of its technology.

The Challenge

Clearwater provides powerful tools through a single portal, with automations and integrations that keep customers returning. Yet the interface created a siloed experience that introduced unnecessary complexity and cognitive load. As a result, clients often relied heavily on managed services, leaving the full value of the tools overlooked.

Clearwater asked us to modernize the experience with a differentiated design that reduces complexity, strengthens integrations, and improves workflows. The goal: elevate the interface to reflect the company’s true innovation and reinforce its position as the industry leader.

How we did it

Identify high-value opportunities and define a conceptual direction to maximize the product family potential.

“We want that tech to be valued, not just the service, which is what happens most of the time”

How We Did It

Curvy line

Over the course of a month, we collaborated with teams from two of Clearwater’s major cybersecurity tools, Integrated Risk Management (IRM) and Network Detection and Response (NDR), to define a redesign concept, using key screens from each tool to demonstrate their potential evolution.

Weeks 1 and 2: Understanding the Tools and Uncovering Opportunities

We kicked the project off with two weeks of discovery and information synthesis which included reviewing Clearwater and competitor products, observing product demos, and conducting stakeholder interviews with the NDR and IRM teams.

From this initial research, we synthesized key findings and identified major product opportunities, validating our insights with the team to ensure we were heading in the right direction. The main opportunity areas we uncovered were:

  • Cumbersome workflows: We focused on reducing obstacles and showcasing how the system automates processes, saving time for users.
  • System silos: We wanted to break down silos and create a more cohesive, connected experience that would support natural workflows and enable users to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Expert and novice user divide: We aimed to bridge the gap by providing valuable insightful high-level data alongside deep dive capabilities, empowering both experts and occasional users to take meaningful action.

Week 3: Exploring Concepts and Choosing a Direction

In the third week, we shifted to sketching and exploring design solutions. We presented two initial design options: a functional, easier-to-develop approach and a more ambitious, differentiated look that would require more custom coding but help Clearwater stand out in the market. After reviewing both options, Clearwater chose to pursue the more differentiated direction, and we began refining the selected screens to align with this vision.

Week 4: Refining Designs and Planning Next Steps

In the final week, we focused on refining the visual and interaction details of the selected screens. We also provided recommendations on implementation priorities, outlining what should be tackled first and what could be addressed later, and suggested the next steps in the design process.

The
Outcomes

We presented a conceptual strategy through five redesigned screens from the NDR and IRM tools. These designs introduced “wow” moments by simplifying complex data into a clear risk narrative, highlighting the combined value of Clearwater’s tools and services. Alongside the visuals, we provided a prioritized roadmap of enhancements and recommendations for development. The team was so energized by the direction that they engaged us for follow-up projects to bring the vision to life.
