Impedimed reached out to UEGroup because critical use errors were appearing in their Sozo product for the L-Dex measurement, which was leading to misdiagnosis. Nurses were confused at the patient information entry stage because they did not understand the difference between bilateral measurements vs unilateral measurements. The results are different based on the selection, which can change the treatment plan. We assessed their current product and created a design that enhanced the usability, clarity, and efficiency of the existing feature set, mitigating use errors without drastic development effort.

The Challenge

The Impedimed Sozo system has bilateral and unilateral measurement options and baseline markers to make readings more accurate for the individual. The problem is that nurses do not understand the difference or purpose of these functions, so they do not use them as intended, compromising the quality of the data. To address this, our design recommendations aimed to improve users' comprehension of measurement selections, clearly differentiate between unilateral and bilateral options, and ensure that all selections were easily discernible without relying on extensive medical knowledge.

Nurses have a limited time to collect this information, making efficiency another key concern, with the need to minimize clicks and prioritize information for at-a-glance interactions. These changes needed to be integrated into the existing framework with minimal disruption to maintain usability for power users of the legacy system.

Outcomes

We took a usability-first approach to the new design. To avoid confusion in measurement types, we flipped the selection from measurement type to selecting patient factors, so users do not need to know the technical differences of the measurement types to make the right selection. All selections are depicted visually, so user success is not dependent on the correct interpretation of text-based directions. Additionally, we reprioritized the information on the report page to prominently display the current L-Dex score and highlight the baseline feature to encourage its use. We streamlined the patient entry and readout workflows of the interface to save clicks and improve efficiency, while leveraging existing design system components. By focusing on these considerations, we enhanced user understanding, efficiency, and accuracy.
